If you want to make a selection, you may use the Rectangular Marquee tool. In the document window, you can usually move a marquee or selection box around an area of the image that you wish to edit, and the options will let you cut, copy, paste, and delete that part. You can close the panel to change between work spaces. You can also expand the panel and see the channels and objects in the Layers panel, the Channels tab, and the Adjustments tab. You can collapse the panel and then expand it to see the Layers, the Channels, and the Adjustments panels. The panel can be changed to a workspace that shows the Adjustments and History tabs and sets the canvas at the default size for the active Photoshop document. The Channels tab and the Adjustments and History tabs reside within a group called the Layers panel. The Layers window is the workspace for editing and management. You can create and edit color with the Adjustments tab, and you can create and edit images with the History tab. These are the three basic channels of color in an image. Each image has three channels: Red, Green, and Blue. The Channels tab is the basic place for image-editing operations. You can group layers together under one of the three tabs in the Layers window: the Channels, Adjustments, and History tabs. Layers are independent layers or groups that can be re-arranged, removed, and merged as a single unit.Įach layer is saved with its own filename, and each layer can be edited independently from the others. Inside a Photoshop document, Photoshop uses layers and groups to organize elements. You can save image files in file formats such as GIF, WMF, and SWF formats, but their usage is limited, and they are not as popular today. Adobe has discontinued support for a number of older file formats.
There are many other image file formats that are not commonly used today. Among those are JPEG (for images such as photographs), TIFF (for multi-page document file format), and Photoshop’s native PSD file format. When you first start using Photoshop, it will present a number of file formats.
